About Life Shelf
What is Life Shelf?
Life Shelf provides practical, thoughtful support for the changes in life that show up at home. We help people navigate decisions about their home, belongings, and legacy, whether they are preparing for a move, adjusting after a loss, helping a parent, or simply ready to make room for what comes next. We bring structure to the work and care to the moments that make it hard.
How is Life Shelf different from a professional organizer, a decluttering service, or a moving company?
Organizers focus on the space. Movers focus on logistics. Decluttering services focus on volume. Life Shelf works with all of it, and also pays attention to why it is hard. Belongings carry memory, family history, and identity, so we make room for that while still moving the project forward. You stay in charge of every decision. We provide the structure, the steady pace, and the next step.
What is your process like?
Every engagement follows a clear, structured process, from the first conversation to the last box. It starts with listening, and every package comes with a written scope, so you always know what is included and what happens next. Real life rarely moves in a straight line, so the process adapts to your pace and your situation.
Why was Life Shelf founded?
Fiona Nowlin started Life Shelf after caring for a close friend through her final months. Over the years she has spent thousands of hours as a caregiver. In the middle of the paperwork, the belongings, and the decisions that could not wait, she saw how few people were available to help families with the practical and emotional work at the same time. Life Shelf was built to fill that gap, with professional structure and real human care.
Who does Life Shelf serve?
We work best with people in transition, and most of our clients are retirees, the adult children who support them, and families navigating a loss. Our focus is on people who are home more often and whose homes no longer fit the way they live. We are also honored to serve clients of any age whose life transition affects their home environment, including a divorce, a career change, or a loss.
What does "Third Act Consultancy" mean?
"Third act" is our way of describing the chapter of life that often begins around retirement, or after a major life transition, when a home no longer fits the way you live. It is not an ending, and it is only one of the changes we support. A move, a loss, a divorce, or a parent who needs help can raise the same questions about a home and its belongings. We call ourselves a consultancy because the work goes beyond organizing. We listen, plan, facilitate difficult conversations, and shape spaces and systems around the life you want to live.
Where does Life Shelf work? Do you serve Ann Arbor, Detroit, and other Michigan cities?
Life Shelf is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, locally serving Washtenaw County, and available to travel throughout Michigan, including Detroit and other cities, and across the US. There is no travel charge within about 30 miles of Ann Arbor. For projects farther away, we discuss travel time, mileage, and any overnight costs before a package is confirmed, and they appear in your written plan.
Getting Started and Packages
How do I get started?
Start a Conversation through our website or by phone, and we reply within two business days. That first conversation is about understanding what is happening, what feels difficult, and whether Life Shelf can help. If we are a good fit, we recommend the package that matches your situation.
Does the first conversation cost anything?
No. We start with a brief phone call, usually 20 to 30 minutes, and we are happy to go longer if it would help. Often we then visit your home to see the situation and what would work. Neither the call nor the visit carries any charge or obligation, and you pay only once you agree to a package.
What happens in the first conversation?
We listen. You tell us what prompted you to reach out, what feels stuck, and what you hope will be different. We ask a few questions about the home, the timeline, and who else is involved. Then we tell you plainly whether we can help and which package we would recommend. This is not a sales pitch. If Life Shelf is not the right fit, we will say so and point you toward someone who is.
What is a Life Shelf package?
A package is a set number of sessions, about two weeks apart, built around a common situation, with a written plan and a clear price. You know what is included, how long it will take, and what it will cost before we begin, so there are no open-ended hourly bills.
What packages do you offer?
Our four packages are Nesting and New Beginnings, The Right-Sizing Solution, The Legacy Library, and Life Transitions Support. Each one is designed for a specific kind of change: settling in after a move or a fresh start, making a home fit the life you live now whether or not you are moving, preserving the papers, photos, and heirlooms of a life, or getting through a major change with steady support. Details are on our How We Can Help page.
What is included in every package?
Every package includes a written plan before we begin, with the scope, timeline, and price; sessions of about two and a half to three hours, led in person by Fiona; planning, research, and coordination between sessions, including arranging donation, consignment, recycling, and family pickups; and a clear picture of what comes next when the work is finished. Materials, printing, and other third-party costs are billed at cost, in addition to the package. Each package then adds the specific work that fits its purpose.
How do I know which package is right for me?
You do not have to figure that out before you reach out. Start a Conversation and describe what is happening. We will recommend the package that fits, and we will tell you if something smaller would serve you better. Many people combine two, such as Right-Sizing with The Legacy Library.
What if my project does not fit neatly into one package?
Tell us what you have in mind and we will talk it through together. We can adjust the scope of a package, combine two, or add a Focused Project, such as a closet reset or a paper and document system. We agree on what it involves and what it costs, in writing, before anything changes.
Can I hire you for just one room or one small project?
Yes. Our Focused Projects are designed for a single room, a closet, a collection, or a paper and document system. If you would rather not commit to a package, we can scope one discrete project. Many clients begin there and return later for something larger, and we will tell you honestly which one fits.
Can I buy a package for a parent or another family member?
Yes. Gifting a package is common. Adult children often give one to a parent, or share the cost with siblings. Start a Conversation and tell us who will receive the package. We talk through who pays and how to share updates. We involve the recipient from the first conversation, respect their choices and pace, and keep you informed at the level everyone prefers. The package, scope, and price are confirmed in writing before anything begins.
What happens when the package is finished?
You leave with the work completed and a clear picture of what comes next. Many clients stop there. If more support would help, we can scope a follow-on package, or Seasonal Care visits can keep the results in place. You can always Start a Conversation again when life changes.
What is Seasonal Care?
Seasonal Care is an annual plan for existing Life Shelf clients: four quarterly visits of about three hours each. Homes drift, seasons change, and new things come in, so we catch small things before they become big ones. A visit might rotate your closet from spring and summer to fall and winter, tackle the pantry, put the garden tools away for the winter, or make room for a new pet. You can raise it in your first conversation or after your project is finished.
Cost, Payment, and Scheduling
How much does Life Shelf cost?
The cost depends on the package, and we confirm the exact price in writing after a first conversation, before anything begins. Each package is a set number of sessions for one price. Materials and printing are billed at cost, in addition to the package. There are no surprises after you say yes.
Why don't you list your prices?
Every home, timeline, and situation is different, and a price that fits one person can be wrong for another. After a short conversation, we send a written plan with the exact price, so there is nothing to decode.
How does payment work?
You pay by invoice. After you approve your plan, a 25% deposit holds your place on the calendar and is credited toward your final invoice. We bill the balance alongside your sessions, and invoices are due on receipt. We accept cash, check, or Zelle, and a credit card can be arranged. Our client services agreement spells out everything, and we walk through it with you before you sign.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
Yes. A deposit of 25% of your package price holds your sessions on the calendar and is credited toward your final invoice. The balance is billed as the sessions happen.
Is there a discount for paying for a package up front?
Yes. If you prefer to pay your package in full at the start, you receive 5% off. It is optional, and you are welcome to pay as we go instead.
Do you charge by the hour?
Packages are priced as a set number of sessions, not by the hour, so you know the total in advance. If you need extra time beyond your package, we agree on it in writing first and bill it separately.
What if I need more time than my package includes?
We talk about it before adding anything, and extra sessions follow the same steady rhythm. You approve additional time in writing first, so there are no surprise bills.
What if I need to reschedule or cancel a session?
Please let us know at least 48 hours before a session, and we will happily reschedule. If you are ill or something unexpected comes up, tell us as soon as you can and we will find a new time. We only charge for late cancellations when there is no illness or emergency.
Can we pause or go slower?
Yes. Life does not always move in a straight line, so we handle pauses and slower paces case by case. Tell us what is happening, and we will work out a plan that fits and confirm it in writing.
How long is a session?
A session usually lasts about two and a half to three hours. That is long enough to make real progress in a room or project and short enough to stay comfortable. We plan each session ahead of time, so the hours go toward what matters most to you.
How often do we meet?
We meet about once every two weeks, so a package usually runs for twice as many weeks as it has sessions. The gentle pace gives you time to decide, rest, and live in your space between visits, and gives us time to handle the planning and ordering in between.
How long does a package take?
Most packages run between about 8 and 12 weeks. Nesting and New Beginnings takes about 8 weeks, The Legacy Library about 10 weeks, and The Right-Sizing Solution and Life Transitions Support about 12 weeks. If you have a move date, we plan backward from it.
For Individuals and Retirees
I am not ready to move or make big changes. Is Life Shelf still right for me?
Yes. Many people start with us long before any move is planned. Right-sizing is about making your home fit your life as it is now, whether or not you are moving. We begin with what matters to you and go at your pace.
I have a lifetime of belongings. Where would we even start?
We start with one room, one shelf, or one category, usually the one that worries you least or the one you most want back. A first session builds momentum and shows you how the process feels. Nobody is asked to decide everything at once.
Will you make me get rid of things?
No. You make every decision about what stays, what goes, and what moves to a new home. Our job is to ask good questions, offer options, and handle the logistics, so you never feel rushed or pressured.
What if I want to keep everything?
Then we help you keep it well. Some things deserve a better home, a label, a story, or a place where you can see them. Keeping is a decision too, and we respect it.
What happens to the things I no longer need?
We help you decide where each thing goes: to family, to friends, to donation, to resale, or to responsible recycling. We handle the sorting and coordinate the pickups and drop-offs, so nothing sits in a pile waiting for you to deal with it.
Can you help if I am moving to a smaller home or a community?
Yes. We help you decide what fits, plan the new space, and coordinate the move alongside the other professionals on your team. Many clients move into a new home that feels like theirs from the first night.
Can my family be involved?
As much or as little as you would like. Some clients invite a daughter or son to a session, and others prefer to work alone and share the results later. We keep everyone informed in the way that you choose.
Is it okay if I get emotional?
Of course. Belongings carry memories, and it is natural to feel something as you sort through them. We bring patience and tissues, and we never rush a feeling.
What if I have a hard time letting go of certain things?
Then we go slowly. We can set a thing aside for later, photograph it, tell its story, or find the right person to receive it. There is no deadline on a decision that matters to you.
I am worried about being judged. What will you think of my home?
We have seen homes of every kind, and we do not judge. Your home reflects a life, and we treat it with respect from the moment we arrive.
After a Loss
Can you help after someone has died?
Yes. When a parent, spouse, or close friend has died, their home often becomes both a place of grief and a long to-do list. We help you move through it gently, at a pace that respects both.
How soon after a loss can we begin?
Whenever you are ready, and not before. Some people reach out within weeks, and others wait a year or more. There is no right timeline, and a first conversation can simply be a place to ask questions.
I do not know where to begin. Can you help me figure that out?
Yes. We start by listening, then suggest a first small step. Often that is one room, one drawer, or one category, so the whole house stops feeling like a single overwhelming task.
What do you do with a loved one's belongings?
We help you sort what to keep, share, donate, sell, or recycle, and we treat each thing with care. Nothing is rushed, and you decide what each item means to you and your family.
What if family members disagree about what to keep?
It is common, and it is rarely about the objects. We help your family talk it through, set fair ways to decide, and keep the focus on the person you love. Disagreement does not mean something is wrong.
I feel guilty getting rid of anything. Is that normal?
Very. Letting go of an item is not letting go of the person. We help you find ways to honor what mattered, through keepsakes, stories, photographs, or passing a thing on to someone who will treasure it.
Will you handle sensitive items with care?
Yes. We treat everything with respect, from letters and photographs to jewelry and everyday belongings. Personal papers, documents, and keepsakes are handled privately, and we lovingly set aside what you may want to look at again.
For Adult Children and Family Members
I live far away. Can you still help my parent?
Yes. We work in person with your parent in their home and keep you informed from wherever you are. You receive updates after each session, and you can join a call to talk through decisions together. Fiona can offer a video walkthrough for family who live out of state, ideally during time she is already working with your parent.
How do you keep me informed without taking over?
We agree on an update rhythm with you and your parent at the start. Your parent stays in charge of decisions, and you stay in the loop with clear summaries of what happened and what is next.
My parent resists help. What can I do?
Start with a conversation, not a plan. Many people hesitate because they fear losing control, so we focus on what they want for their home and their days. Sometimes a first conversation with a neutral outside person is all it takes.
How do we talk to my parent about this without upsetting them?
Lead with care, not with the clutter. Ask what they would like to be easier, and what they want to keep close. We are happy to talk through language that works, or to join the conversation as the outside person.
What if my siblings and I disagree?
We can help. We keep the focus on your parent's wishes, set up fair ways to decide, and share the same updates with everyone involved. It is common for families to see things differently, and it does not mean something is wrong.
Can you help us find a home for the things nobody in the family wants?
Yes. We coordinate donations, resale, and responsible disposal, and we find good homes for items with real value or meaning. You do not have to carry it all yourself.
For Professional Partners
Who are your professional partners?
We work alongside estate attorneys, financial advisors, geriatric care managers, realtors, senior living communities, and other professionals who support families through transitions.
How does a referral work?
You introduce us, with the client's permission, and we reach out to schedule a first conversation. We keep you informed with updates the client has agreed to, and we never step into your role.
What does Life Shelf handle that I do not?
We handle the hands-on, in-home work: sorting, planning, coordinating donation and resale, and preparing a home for what comes next. That frees you to focus on the legal, financial, medical, or real estate work you do best.
Will you stay in your lane?
Yes. We do not give legal, financial, or medical advice, and we do not replace your role. We hand questions back to you promptly and respect your relationship with the client.
How do you communicate with partners?
We agree on a rhythm up front, usually a short update after key milestones, shared only with the client's permission. You always know where things stand.
How do we get started working together?
Send us a note through the contact page and we will set up a short conversation. We will talk about the clients you serve, how referrals should work, and what would be most useful to you.
Process, Concerns, and Approach
Can we work together virtually?
Yes. Our first conversation can happen by phone or by video, and planning and check-ins can be virtual too. Hands-on sessions happen in person in your home. If you live far away, we can often coordinate with a family member who is nearby, and we can offer a video walkthrough so you can see the space.
What should I expect to feel?
A mix, most likely. Many people feel relief, some feel sadness, and most feel both. We make room for all of it, and the work usually gets lighter as it goes.
How is Life Shelf different from the other professionals already helping me?
We do the personal, hands-on work that sits between the other professionals in your life. We work alongside your attorney, advisor, realtor, or care manager, and we do not replace any of them.
Is Life Shelf only for wealthy families?
No. Life Shelf is for anyone with a home full of memories and a transition ahead. Packages are priced as a set number of sessions, so you know the total before you begin.
Is there anything you do not do?
Yes. We do not provide legal, financial, or medical advice, and we are not a moving company, an estate sale company, or a junk removal service. We coordinate with those professionals when you need them.
What does right-sizing mean? Is it the same as downsizing?
Not quite. Downsizing is about having less. Right-sizing is about having what fits your life now, in a space that works for you, whether or not you are moving.
Where do the things I release end up? Is it sustainable?
We do our best to give things a second life. We look first to family and friends, then to donation, resale, and recycling, and landfill is a last resort. We coordinate the pickups, so you do not have to arrange them yourself.
Is Life Shelf insured, and what are Fiona's credentials?
Yes. Life Shelf carries both general liability and professional liability insurance, with proof available on request. Fiona brings thousands of hours as a caregiver, more than a decade managing enterprise products in corporate life, a change management certification, training in project management, product management, and grief and trauma-informed practice, and a yoga teacher training certificate.
