Someone you love needs help. You are not in this alone.

Maybe you just got home from a difficult visit. Maybe it's late and you're looking for a way to help your parent that doesn't feel like taking over their life. At Life Shelf, we care about your parents as much as you do, and we know exactly what to do.

What we do, and why it helps

Life Shelf works with retirees to right-size their homes and lives while there is still time, clarity, and choice. We follow a clear, structured process that begins by listening and ends with what matters most preserved with care.

For your parent, that means a calmer and safer home, decisions made with dignity rather than under pressure, and a trusted guide who treats them as the capable adult they are. For you, it means peace of mind, fewer difficult weekends, and a plan instead of a looming problem.

We also help with the conversations themselves. Family harmony is one of our core values, and when it helps, we gently facilitate discussions about what stays, what moves to family, and what is released.

How to start the conversation with a parent

This is often the hardest part. A few things we have learned from families who have done it well.

  • Lead with their goals, not your worries

Ask what they want the next few years to look like. Right-sizing is about making room for that, not about what you are afraid of.

  • Frame it as a beginning

This is their story and their home. The work is about setting the stage for a third act, not about managing a decline.

  • Offer a conversation, not a verdict

Your first conversation carries no charge and no obligation, for you or your parent. It puts a professional in the room instead of you.

  • Let the decisions stay theirs

Our role is to guide, never to override. Parents who feel in control of the process are the ones who finish it with relief instead of resentment.

Make the first call on their behalf

Many families begin with an adult child reaching out. Tell us what is happening and we will suggest how to involve your parent so the process feels collaborative rather than imposed. Packages can also be purchased by adult children as a gift or shared among siblings, with the scope and price clear before anything begins.

No-charge first conversation

By phone, by video, or at the home. No obligation, and your parent stays in charge of every decision.

Things families often want to know

Can I hire Life Shelf on my parent's behalf?
Yes. Many engagements begin with an adult child. We will still need your parent's own agreement to proceed, because the work only succeeds when it is theirs.
Will my parent be pushed to get rid of things?
No. There is no right way to let go of something that mattered. Every decision is theirs, made at a compassionate pace.
I live out of state. Can I still be involved?
Yes. With your parent's permission, we keep you informed through regular updates, video walkthroughs, or simply the reassurance that the work is in good hands.
Is this discreet?
Discretion is one of our core values. Nothing about your family is shared without written consent.
Is Life Shelf insured?
Yes. Life Shelf carries general and professional liability insurance, so the work in your parent's home is covered.
